South Coast of Sri Lanka – Beautiful Beaches

Today we will try to explore the Beautiful Beaches of South Coast of Sri Lanka. Let’s take a look

Planning our Sri Lankan adventure presented a unique challenge: choosing the perfect spot along the enchanting south coast. The multitude of options and diverse opinions from fellow travelers made the decision overwhelming. Faced with this, we opted for flexibility, embarking on a journey to explore and uncover the most beautiful beaches the south coast had to offer.

Despite allocating a generous two weeks, it proved insufficient to fully grasp the immense beauty and hidden gems that this region harbors. Our quest focused on serene, quiet beaches with a relaxed atmosphere, prioritizing safety for swimming. Here, I recount our experiences and discoveries, sharing insights and recommendations for each beach.

1. Goyambokka Beach, Tangalle

Our exploration commenced in Tangalle, where Goyambokka Beach emerged as an early recommendation. Positioned just west of Tangalle, it greeted us with a not-too-large stretch of sand already bustling with activity upon our afternoon arrival. Despite the crowds, Goyambokka lived up to its reputation as one of Tangalle’s most beautiful beaches.

What set Goyambokka apart was its proximity to other equally stunning beaches. Adjacent to Goyambokka, the beach at the Anantara Resort offered a captivating bay, though with wilder seas and limited shade. On the opposite side of Goyambokka Beach, a charming cove awaited exploration—though not suitable for swimming due to its tumultuous waters, it offered a delightful restaurant with panoramic views.

Opting to stay for two nights, we chose the Goyambokka View Guesthouse, a new, small-scale accommodation just a short walk from the beach. Despite the popularity, we observed a lack of the backpacker vibe, prompting us to seek a different atmosphere after our stay.

Accessibility to Goyambokka Beach:

Located approximately 3 kilometers from Tangalle, Goyambokka Beach is accessible by a budget-friendly tuk-tuk ride or a short bus journey with a 500-meter walk from the intersection.

2. Medaketiya Beach

Transitioning from Goyambokka, we ventured to Medaketiya Beach, accessible by a tuk-tuk ride from Tangalle. While not rivalling Goyambokka’s beauty, Medaketiya offered a pleasant and relaxed atmosphere. The beach featured many beach bars that transformed into lively spots for evening bites and drinks. Breakwaters in the sea created designated swimming areas, contributing to the overall inviting ambiance.

Medaketiya Beach’s expansive stretch allowed us to explore further, with the option to trek to Marakolliya and Rekawa Beaches—an enticing prospect for those with an extended stay. Our time at Medaketiya served as a prelude to a nature break, prompting us to embark on a Yala National Park safari from Tissamaharama.

3. Hiriketiya Beach

Returning from our safari adventure, we set our sights on Hiriketiya Beach, situated approximately 15 kilometers west of Tangalle. Regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful bays, Hiriketiya had gained popularity in recent years. The beach boasted trendy restaurants, making it a hotspot for backpackers and surf enthusiasts.

While the beach’s charm was evident, our visit in January revealed a bustling scene with limited tranquility, potentially influenced by the season. The bay, packed with beach beds and surfers, presented challenges for capturing serene photos. Despite the vibrant energy, the density of visitors led us to crave a quieter setting.

Accessibility to Hiriketiya Beach:

Accessible by bus between Tangalle, Dikwella, and Matara, visitors can alight at the intersection to Hiriketiya Beach, followed by a 15-minute walk or a convenient tuk-tuk ride.

4. Dikwella Beach

In search of a more serene experience, we discovered Dikwella Beach as a neighboring alternative to the lively Hiriketiya. While the beach may not match the former’s beauty, it compensates with tranquility and ample swimming opportunities. Dikwella became our preferred spot for a leisurely swim, offering clear waters with a gradual slope and minimal waves.

This unassuming beach provided respite from the crowds, presenting a peaceful environment for relaxation. An ideal retreat for those desiring a less bustling atmosphere, Dikwella emerged as a favorite swimming destination among the places visited along the south coast.

Accessibility to Dikwella Beach:

Situated near Hiriketiya, Dikwella Beach is easily accessible by foot, offering a quieter alternative for visitors seeking a peaceful retreat.

5. Silent Beach, Tangalle

A local tip during our Goyambokka stay led us to Silent Beach, a mesmerizing gem just a 15-minute walk from Goyambokka Beach. Also known as Amanwella Beach, named after the luxurious Amanwella Resort perched on its shores, Silent Beach stands as one of the most captivating beaches encountered.

Silent Beach, with its white sandy bay and swaying palm trees, boasts unparalleled beauty. Despite its splendor, the beach remains surprisingly uncrowded. While swimming can be challenging due to strong waves, the sheer beauty and peaceful ambience make Silent Beach an enduring favorite.

Accessibility to Silent Beach, Tangalle:

Accessing Silent Beach involves a 15-minute walk from Goyambokka Beach, guided by landmarks such as guesthouse Sea Breeze Garden or Amanwella Resort, as it might not be clearly marked on navigation apps.

6. Talalla Beach

A day trip led us to Talalla Beach, often hailed as one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches. A short bus ride from Tangalle brought us to this expansive, breathtaking stretch of sand. Although the sea appeared rough, locals assured its safety for swimming.

Talalla Beach, with its limited accommodations and minimal tourist presence, offered a peaceful haven. Despite the challenges of swimming in the lively sea, the sheer beauty and tranquility made Talalla a worthwhile visit.

Accessibility to Talalla Beach:

Accessible by bus from Tangalle to Matara, alighting at Talalla Beach after a 25-minute journey, visitors can immerse themselves in the beauty of this less-explored gem.

7. Mihiripenna Beach

Near Unawatuna, Mihiripenna Beach emerged as a surprise find, located just five minutes from Dalawella. Contrary to the disappointment of Dalawella Beach, Mihiripenna enchanted us with its serene bay, fine sandy beach, and crystal-clear waters. The beach, situated on a tranquil bay, presented an ideal spot for swimming, though some areas featured coral and stones.

Mihiripenna Beach, accompanied by a nearby boutique hotel, offered a quiet yet accessible base for exploring Unawatuna, Galle, Mirissa, and Matara.

Accessibility to Mihiripenna Beach:

Mihiripenna Beach is conveniently located near Dalawella, making it accessible for those exploring the Unawatuna, Galle, and Matara regions.

Conclusion: Crafting the Perfect South Coast Experience

Our journey along Sri Lanka’s south coast uncovered a tapestry of beaches, each with its unique charm. From the lively atmosphere of Hiriketiya to the tranquil beauty of Silent Beach, and the serene allure of Dikwella, each destination offered a distinctive experience.

While popular spots like Mirissa and Unawatuna showcased their own appeal, it was the lesser-known gems like Mihiripenna and Silent Beach that left an indelible mark. As we concluded our exploration, the south coast revealed itself as a mosaic of natural wonders, inviting travelers to craft their perfect itinerary—whether seeking vibrant energy, quiet retreats, or the perfect blend of both. South Coast of Sri Lanka, with its diverse offerings, promises an unforgettable journey for those willing to explore beyond the well-trodden paths.

What to do in Genoa :

Genoa, often overshadowed by its more popular Italian counterparts, holds a wealth of treasures waiting to be discovered. While it may not immediately come to mind when planning an Italian adventure, this maritime city boasts a rich history as the former capital of a powerful republic and the birthplace of renowned figures like Christopher Columbus and Niccolo Paganini.

Despite its lesser-known status, it offers a unique charm and a plethora of attractions that appeal to curious travelers. So, what makes this city special, and what should you do when you visit?

Getting to Genoa

Reaching Genoa is easier than you might think. During the summer months, S7 Airlines offers direct flights, while various European carriers operate year-round flights. Alternatively, you can fly to Milan and take a short train ride to Genoa, which is only about an hour and a half away. Train travel is also an option, with direct routes available from cities like Moscow. Whether you choose to fly or take the train, Genoa is well-connected and easily accessible.

Where to Stay in Genoa

Choosing accommodation in Genoa requires some consideration, especially due to the city’s intricate layout. The historical center may seem compact, but its labyrinthine streets can be confusing to navigate, particularly with luggage. Opting for hotels near major transportation hubs like Principe and Bignoli train stations or metro stations is advisable.

For first-time visitors staying briefly, accommodations near Genova Piazza Principe offer convenience and easy access to transportation links, including the airport bus stop and cruise terminal.
