GPS devices are small, but as a wristwatch, they’re quite big. They’re like two large diving watches put together. For runners who prefer minimal gear, this might feel bulky. But the big size has its benefits – a large screen showing lots of information at once.

These watches connect to satellites to pinpoint your exact location, showing where you are and where you’re headed, providing plenty of stats. At first, it takes time to link with satellites for location, as the manual warns. But after the initial setup, satellite connections happen quickly.

By default, the screen mostly displays a stopwatch, distance traveled, and pace. Satellites track your distance and speed, which is super helpful for runners or walkers – everything you need is right there on your wrist.

The Forerunner goes beyond the basics. One of its best features is the virtual coach mode. It lets you set goals based on various factors like distance, time, or pace. You’ll see an image of a virtual running partner and know their position relative to yours, helping you adjust your speed. It feels like running alongside someone and was quite helpful during our test runs.

For runners who prefer hitting the track without much planning, the breadcrumb mode is a lifesaver. Using GPS, it tracks your run and leaves electronic breadcrumbs. This way, you can follow them back to where you started, offering a sense of security. You can even set waypoints (specific coordinates) to guide your route while running or walking.

Thanks to the lithium-ion battery, the device isn’t as bulky as it could be. It holds a charge for about 16 hours, perfect for a day-long adventure race or trail walk.

Forerunner also features a history mode to compare runs and allows you to transfer data from the device to your PC, which serious runners will find useful.

A Quick Look

The Forerunner device offers a lot, including the ability to upload your workout data to a PC by downloading the Garmin software from their website. But, like everything, it’s not perfect. We had trouble getting a signal in heavily built-up areas where buildings interrupted the device’s line of sight with satellites. Overall, though, it performed just as you’d expect from a GPS device strapped to your arm.

However, we can’t help but think this might be more of a quick fix for those not serious about off-track running. It’s great to know your speed and distance, but road running is quite different from treadmill running.

Similarly, consider bike computers – it’s rare to find a cyclist not missing it when they go out without it.

Apart from being a bit large for an arm accessory, it’s a great device. If you’re used to wearing a watch while running, you won’t notice much difference with this slightly bigger device on your wrist. Ultimately, it’s a tool for measurement if you need it.
