AtlasVPN Review
AtlasVPN in Brief :
AtlasVPN is a relatively new bud on the VPN tree, but one that is now blossoming. We took a look at this newcomer and were a little impressed, while at the same time thinking that it lacked a bit of muscle and features before it can compete with the absolute best
AtlasVPN saw the light of day as late as 2020. It quickly became popular. The reasons for that were a well-functioning free version and a low-priced paid version which, based on the costs, delivered solidly.
The success meant that Nord Security, which previously owned NordVPN, stepped in and bought the entire company the following year.
Under NordSecurity, AtlasVPN has continued to develop into a real alternative when choosing a VPN.
The service is headquartered in the United States, and they currently have around 750 VPN servers in 32 countries.
Recommendations
A VPN service should ensure safe traffic on the Internet and secure your anonymity. It is also expected that it will give you access to geographically blocked content, such as watching Netflix from Norway. On top of all this, it must also ensure that all this happens without significant delays for you who use the service.
The way this is done is that the VPN service provides you with a VPN server in a given location that you can connect to before posting to the Internet. Using an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN server, it should not be possible to trace your traffic.
We will therefore measure and evaluate AtlasVPN on
- streaming
- speed
- gaming
- privacy
- file sharing
- general security
- various functions
- ease of use
AtlasVPN for Streaming
Streaming services will always be geo-blocked. This is because the streaming services buy rights to show films and series individually for each country. Therefore, NRK, for example, has rights to show purchased material only in Norway.
Testing AtlasVPN gives good results with different streaming services from different places in the world.
However, this only applies to the paid version.
Good Speed
With a VPN, it will always be a waste of time. There will be many command lines during the encryption to be run through. On good VPN services, this loss of time will be so small that it will not seem annoying.
Here, AtlasVPN has adopted the WireGuard protocol for encryption. The special thing about this is that it consists of only 4,000 command lines where other protocols require over 400,000 lines.
A test from London to a server in the US measured a time loss of 3%. This is considered minimal, as a good VPN is otherwise usually up to 10%. Servers in Asia and Australia were also tested. There was a higher time loss here, but still well below average.
Not as Good for Gaming
When playing online, it is the ping speed that matters. Ping denotes the time from when you give a command in the game until there is a reaction. Fast games require low ping values.
Tests performed here show ping values between 1 and 82 ms. This does not hold for games such as PS:GO and similar. By comparison , ExpressVPN boasts an average ping value of 3ms. Read Best VPN for Gaming.
Privacy
Privacy is the very crux of a VPN. No information about you as a user shall be stored, nor anything that can identify you in any other way.
AtlasVPN, like the other major VPN services, has affirmed a no-logging policy. However, so far they have not subjected this practice to any kind of audit and control by an independent third party. Nor have there been any episodes where the logging policy has been tried out in practice.
One concern is that the service is based in the United States. This is a so-called 5-eye country, which means that it exchanges intelligence information with a number of other Western countries.
An American court could then hypothetically demand access to information from AtlasVPN. However, as long as the service adheres to its zero-logging policy, there will be nothing to gain.
Information that AtlasVPN actually records is what type of device is logged in from and which operating system is used. However, this is not something that can help identify you.
You must also provide an email address when you sign up for the paid service.
AtlasVPN and File Sharing
VPN is a must when sharing files online. The good news here is that all 750 servers of AtlasVPN are ready for this. This is not a given. Even the three servers belonging to the free service can be used for this.
An informal test showed that a 3GB file was downloaded in less than 10 minutes, which is considered a good result.
The security parts of the program ensure that the download takes place safely. We then refer to the AES 256 encryption, the WireGuard protocol and the kill switch function.
A small sliver of joy here is that AtlasVPN does not allow “port forwarding”. This function is necessary for you to be able to share your content when using torrent programs. The same program will penalize you when you don’t share yourself by making your download needier.
Security at AtlasVPN
As for the software, AtlasVPN has all the usual security equipment. We’re talking AES 256 encryption, kill switch, leak protection and WireGuard protocol. But it has nothing extra beyond this.
Not all VPN services have integrated the WireGuard protocol despite very good results with this. This is due to the fact that there is a part to be done in connection with adaptation to the other functions.
There is also another protocol that is the automatic choice when you log in to AtlasVPN, namely IKEv2. On a general basis, we recommend switching manually to WireGuard, which is considered both faster and safer. The service does not use OpenVPN, which is otherwise the most used protocol.
The kill switch function is more or less standard with the larger VPN providers. It ensures that the connection to the Internet is cut if the VPN server fails for any reason. That way, you will not be tracked, and can continue with your work on another server.
AtlasVPN also offers something they call Safe Swap servers. These are only available in three countries, in the USA, the Netherlands and Singapore. The effect is that they constantly change IP addresses while you surf.
The intention is clearly to confuse any pursuers. WE can’t quite see that this is necessary as your own IP address should be hidden because you use VPN, and that you will anyway get a new IP address the next time you log in.
What you don’t get with AtlasVPN
While AtlasVPN provides all the features you would necessarily expect from a good VPN service, it lacks that little extra that the big services like NordVPN and ExpressVPN have in store.
AtlasVPN has apps for the major platforms, but lacks browser extensions and smart DNS functionality. You also cannot install it on your router.
The biggest miss is probably the split, or split, tunnel. It is only present on the Android app. With a split tunnel, it is possible to work with and without VPN at the same time, in two different channels. This is practical when you are on pages where you have to provide personal details.
“ Tor over VPN ” is another good additional tool for those who are extremely concerned about online anonymity, and which you do not get via AtlasVPN. The Tor browser is specially designed not to show too much of yourself when you are online, and is excellent in combination with a good VPN.
They also don’t have double VPN. meaning that your traffic is filtered through two encrypted servers before being sent online. (It will probably still do with one for the vast majority of us).
Finally, RAM-only VPN servers are not offered. By using these, you would get an additional guarantee that user information cannot be retrieved from the server.
AtlasVPN works in China
China is known for censorship and blocking of a number of Internet services. The litmus test of a VPN is thus whether it is able to bypass these by surfing from Chinese territory.
Now, you may not necessarily be going to China, but it is still a sign of quality that AtlasVPN smoothly bypasses these restrictions and allows you to access your social media accounts and other blocked sites from Chinese soil.
Note that you must install the application on your device before you travel. The download page is blocked.
Ease of use
Not everyone is interested in quirky features and gimmicks. You just want a VPN that works.
Here, AtlasVPN is a good choice. It is not overloaded with options. You download the app, click connect and you are online with secure VPN.
Some users will probably miss the possibilities for individual adaptations, such as encryption levels or configuring a proxy server.
Paying users have access to live chat support, while free users have to make do with online guides.
