ProtonVPN Review

ProtonVPN Review Summary :

ProtonVPN is a high-quality VPN service based in Switzerland. Although it is a somewhat non-traditional jurisdiction to locate a VPN service, the country is an excellent location. Compared to a number of other VPN providers, ProtonVPN has had security in the driver’s seat when developing their platform.

The developers behind the service are the same that launched the popular email service ProtonMail. The VPN service started as an additional service for e-mail customers in 2017, but has since been established as an independent service under the Proton umbrella.

The service works for streaming from Netflix and Hulu, among others, but is not optimized for it. It is therefore particularly suitable for those of you who are looking for high security online. Our ProtonVPN test shows that the solution is a versatile, high-quality VPN that is packed with a number of sensible functionalities around privacy and security . Among other things, the company uses AES-256 bit encryption with OpenVPN, which is a popular way to protect sensitive data online.

When it comes to speed and selection, ProtonVPN is strong. The company has recently upgraded large parts of its server infrastructure and we therefore managed in our ProtonVPN review to achieve high speeds on both nearby and long-distance servers. Considering the high security, our ProtonVPN test shows that the solution is excellent for those who want a little extra security and have a conscious focus on protecting sensitive information when you are online.

Short Summary

ProtonVPN is a versatile, high-quality VPN solution that has security as its top focus. From the team that also launched ProtonMail, the solution has quickly developed into an easy-to-use application that puts privacy and security in the driver’s seat. The service also works for streaming Netflix, among other things, but as the site struggles with both DNS lookups and SSL communication for streaming services, it is not particularly well suited for that.

It is therefore far better for users who simply want high security when traveling online, but do not want to use a VPN for frequent streaming of content.

Recommendations

If you are looking for a VPN that offers high security, ProtonVPN will be an excellent choice. Produced by the same people who launched ProtonMail, the company has a long and established reputation for privacy online. This gives high credibility to the solution and security for customers. The company is strategically located in Switzerland, which is a bastion known for comprehensive privacy protection. With a total of 1254 servers spread over 54 different countries, ours scores

ProtonVPN review high on both quality and offer. However, the service is a bit stiffly priced compared to similar solutions as the lowest monthly price is achieved with a 24-month subscription and ends up at around NOK 59. This is in the upper tier of VPN solutions, especially as they do not offer particularly good functionalities for streaming.

ProtonVPN Speed and Locations

It’s no secret that a VPN will slow down your online speed. Therefore, it is important to find a VPN that provides high speed and light traffic so that the reduction remains minimal. Our ProtonVPN test showed that we experienced a reduction in speed of about 9% with and without ProtonVPN.

For the vast majority of people who use a high-speed line, these will be marginal reductions and hardly noticeable. On a 100mbps line this resulted in us achieving 91mbps speed with ProtonVPN enabled which is still more than adequate for both work and play.

When it comes to locations, ProtonVPN has an excellent selection. The company offers 1254 servers with a corresponding number of IP addresses. All servers are physically located on location and ProtonVPN does not use digital solutions.

As the company only uses physical servers rather than digital virtual servers, the number of servers they can offer is somewhat reduced, but it increases security for users considerably. In total, ProtonVPN’s servers are located in 74 different cities in 54 countries worldwide. This includes a good selection in popular destinations such as Germany, North America and the UK.

The company offers Secure Core servers in Switzerland, Iceland and Sweden. The reason for these locations is that all countries have very friendly privacy regulations and high security. Unfortunately, it is unattractive to use a Secure Core server as the speed of the connection can be reduced by up to 65%.

This is considerably higher than the 9% we experienced during our ProtonVPN test. We still have positive ProtonVPN experiences, but probably choose to drop Secure Core servers for the sake of slightly better speed.

ProtonVPN – Logging policy and ownership

Although the company says they have a total no-log policy, further investigation shows that the company collects timestamps for your connections. This is admittedly minimal information and cannot be used to identify a user, but it is still more information than corresponding premium players collect.

Specifically, ProtonVPN will store a timestamp of your last successful connection, but this will be replaced each time you connect. Although this may raise some eyebrows, the company has had to prove in the real world that they actually maintain their no-log policy.

In January 2019, the company was required to hand over information about a ProtonVPN user by a Swiss judge. The company could not comply with the ruling as they had no information stored that could be released. This means that ProtonVPN belongs to a small and exclusive group of VPN players who have actually proven that they protect their users despite pressure from authorities and the judiciary.

The only information the company records is your email account, payment information and customer service history. You can thus achieve complete anonymity by using a ProtonID and Bitcoin when you register.

ProtonVPN Security and Privacy

When it comes to security, there are few VPN services that can really compare to ProtonVPN. The company is among the most secure and reliable VPN services in the world. With IKEv2, OpenVPN, AES-256 bit encryption and a number of protocols, the solution will securely and efficiently encrypt all your data and hide your original IP address.

In addition, the company uses anti-leak measures such as DNS Leak Blocking, First-party DNS, IPV6 Leak Blocking and VPN Kill Switch. This ensures you a safe and reliable connection, and cuts the connection if it is about to be exposed.

Among the more advanced functionalities you will find Ad blocker, Split Tunneling and the possibility to use the TOR network via VPN server. To protect users’ privacy, the company is headquartered in Switzerland, which is known as an excellent privacy jurisdiction.

Among other things, the country has strict privacy laws with a long history of protecting users. Switzerland is not a member of the EU, but part of the EEA and can thus avoid the EU’s data legislation including the Data Retention directive from 2006. Switzerland is also not part of the 14 Eyes alliance or any other intelligence cooperation, which means that they do not hand over or collect enter information with the intention of sharing it with other nations.

ProtonVPN Streaming Services & Torrenting

It’s no secret that ProtonVPN’s focus is on high security and not on streaming, but the company still provides access to a number of services. Among other things, we got access to American Netflix, but only on plus servers which are exclusively available to paying members.

As for other Netflix libraries, ProtonVPN gained access to the UK, India, Italy and Switzerland which is a very limited number compared to other VPN services that can offer up to 30 different libraries. On a far more positive side, we were able to access Amazon Prime Video, Hulu and Disney + on the US servers.

When it comes to torrenting, ProtonVPN has dedicated servers that offer high speed and extra security to protect your IP from other P2P users. The optimized servers are simply marked with a separate symbol in the form of two arrows, but only 12 of ProtonVPN’s servers have this symbol.

This means that there is a very limited number of servers that are well suited for file sharing. If you live far away from these, you may experience lower speeds and less than optimal performance.

ProtonVPN therefore offers high security for distribution, but neither the best selection nor the highest speed. If you are primarily going to do file sharing, it may therefore be useful to look for another VPN service.

ProtonVPN on different devices

When it comes to using ProtonVPN on different platforms, we are not surprised that it is on Windows that the service performs at its best. In the Windows application, you get access to a wide range of functionality and can find, among other things, a VPN Kill switch, Split tunneling and alternative routing.

See also  iPhone 15 Pro Max A Best Game Console - Why?

This makes it possible to bypass blocked websites by routing your data through several ProtonVPN servers at the same time. For mobile devices, the Android application is the best, here you get access to most of the functionality that ProtonVPN can offer, but you don’t get a Kill Switch on mobile.

On MacOS, however, the selection is very limited. For being a desktop app, you get little functionality included. You can enable a Kill Switch, but OpenVPN is not available for mac users. The connection is limited to IKEv2 and more advanced security such as tunneling and alternative routing is not possible.

We find similar deficiencies in the iOS application. ProtonVPN will therefore be best suited for users based on Microsoft Windows, while MacOS and iOS users should consider a platform that is better optimized for their use.

ProtonVPN Ease of use

As a security-focused VPN service, ProtonVPN has prioritized functionality over design. None of the applications are particularly handy to use and the design is very simple. That said, it’s worth noting that compared to other high-security VPN services, ProtonVPN’s design isn’t the worst we’ve seen.

You can easily find the settings you need and can make the necessary configurations, but they could probably acquire a wider customer base if they had made the design a little easier to use.

All in all, we have no problems finding our way around any of the applications, but it took some time to get used to the layout and navigation. ProtonVPN is therefore best suited for more experienced VPN users who need comprehensive security and are willing to spend time tailoring their own experience in the software.

ProtonVPN Pricing

ProtonVPN offers a slightly different payment system than many other VPN players offer. Namely, you can choose between four different membership levels, as well as three different periods. They offer a free version where you can use one device and access servers in three different countries. As for pricing, this starts at $11.49. You can also sign up for 12 or 24 months, where you will get a significant discount on the monthly price.

For payment, ProtonVPN accepts the vast majority. Among other things, you can pay with credit card, debit card, PayPal, Bitcoin and physical cash. They currently do not accept international services such as AliPay for users outside the EU and USA. On top of this, ProtonVPN offers a 30-day money back guarantee with no explanation needed. All you have to do is send an email to customer service and the money will then be back in your account within 14 days.

How to Clear the RAM on iPhone in seconds

A Quick Guide on How to Clear RAM on iPhone in Seconds :

For iPhone users, ensuring optimal performance is paramount to a seamless user experience. One effective way to achieve this is by freeing up space in the Random Access Memory (RAM), where the device temporarily stores data needed for running applications.

When the RAM is cluttered, your iPhone may experience sluggishness, longer loading times, and even unexpected app closures. In this guide, we’ll explore the simple yet powerful method of clearing RAM on your iPhone to enhance its performance in just a few seconds.

Understanding the Importance of Clearing RAM:

Quick Reset for Different iPhone Models:

The easiest and most effective way to clear RAM on an iPhone involves performing a quick reset. The method varies slightly depending on the type of iPhone model you own. Follow these steps:

For iPhone Models with Face ID (iPhone X and newer):

  • Press and hold the volume down button and the side button simultaneously.
  • When the power off slider appears, drag it to the right to turn off your iPhone.
  • Wait approximately 30 seconds and then turn the device back on.

Battery and Storage Check:

If your iPhone continues to exhibit slow performance, it may be time to check the battery health or free up additional storage space. Contact Apple support for further assistance.

Conclusion:

In just a matter of seconds, you can breathe new life into your iPhone by clearing its RAM. The quick reset method, coupled with proactive measures like closing unused apps and managing notifications, ensures that your device runs smoothly and efficiently.

By understanding the importance of RAM and regularly optimizing its usage, you can enjoy a responsive and high-performing iPhone. Incorporate these simple steps into your routine, and experience the difference in speed and responsiveness on your beloved device.

How to Improve iPhone Battery Life :

One of the common grievances among iPhone users revolves around the device’s battery life. Many users find that their iPhones don’t hold a charge as well as other high-end smartphones. While the capacity of the phone’s components may contribute to this issue, there are adjustments and tricks within the iPhone settings that can help extend battery life.

In this detailed guide, we will explore various strategies for improving iPhone battery life, specifically focusing on iOS 17.

Optimizing Screen Features:

One of the prominent features impacting battery life is the always-on screen, particularly on newer devices. To address this, users can disable the always-on screen feature by navigating to Settings, selecting ‘Display and Brightness,’ and deactivating it.

This adjustment can significantly reduce battery drainage, especially for those who don’t find this feature essential.

Managing Screen Brightness:

Another factor affecting battery life is screen brightness. Excessive brightness can lead to faster battery depletion. To address this, ensure that the iPhone’s automatic screen brightness adjustment feature is activated. Users can access this setting by going to ‘Settings,’ selecting ‘Display and Brightness,’ and enabling the ‘Auto-Brightness’ option.

By allowing the phone to adjust brightness based on ambient lighting conditions, users can extend battery life considerably.

Addressing Haptic Feedback:

The haptic feedback of the keyboard, also known as the haptic keyboard, can contribute to unnecessary energy consumption.
