DJI Mini 4 Pro Review

DJI Mini 4 Pro Review : The DJI Mini 3 Pro was my top pick for drones in 2022 and possibly my all-time favorite. It’s small, lightweight, easy to carry around, and doesn’t spook people passing by. Plus, it takes amazing pictures and has enough professional features for serious video work.

Now, its new version has hit the market, and it promises to be even better. While it’s not drastically different from the previous one, it now has obstacle avoidance from all directions, improved video capabilities, and some handy improvements to make using it even better.

I’ve been testing it out by flying it for the past week or so to see how it performs in real life. That’s what I’ve been up to!

Pros and Cons of DJI Mini 4 Pro

The DJI Mini 4 Pro isn’t a completely new drone, but it’s an upgrade to the beloved Mini 3 Pro. It comes with added features like all-direction obstacle avoidance, better slow-motion abilities, waypoint flights, and D Log M for improved video quality. The Mini 3 Pro was already fantastic, and these additions make it even better.

Pros:

  • Full omnidirectional obstacle avoidance
  • Recording capability up to 4K at 100 frames per second
  • HDR video at resolutions up to 4K 60 frames per second
  • New legs for stable take-offs
  • Profile D Log M for enhanced video color grading

Cons:

  • Not a huge leap from the previous model
  • Still quite pricey

When choosing your options, consider these upgraded features and whether they align with what you’re looking for in a drone.

As always, DJI provides different purchasing options for the DJI Mini 4 Pro. You can go for the Fly More Combo, which includes two spare batteries, a 3-compartment charger, and a carrying case. Or there’s the standard package containing the drone itself, one battery, and a controller.

For the controller, DJI offers two options:

  • The standard remote control with a phone clip that needs a smartphone running the DJI Fly app to work.
  • The DJI RC 2, which has an integrated Android phone, eliminating the need for a separate smartphone.

It’s essential to know that the DJI Mini 4 Pro uses the latest DJI O4 image transmission system, which means it’s not compatible with older DJI remotes. If you had the Mini 3 Pro with DJI RC, unfortunately, you won’t be able to use it with the Mini 4 Pro.

Design

The DJI Mini 4 Pro closely resembles its predecessor, the Mini 3 Pro. It maintains a similar size, color, and importantly, weighs just under 250 grams. This lightweight nature allows the Mini 4 Pro to bypass many drone-related regulations worldwide, making it easier to fly without needing registration in various places.

The Mini 4 Pro now features feet at the ends of the front arms, similar to the Air 3 and Mavic 3 series. This addition greatly improves stability during takeoff and landing, especially on uneven surfaces.

Another noticeable change is the updated obstacle avoidance sensors. The front sensors have convex fisheye lenses and are angled outward instead of facing straight ahead. This smart alteration enables the Mini 4 Pro to detect obstacles in all directions using the same number of sensors, showcasing clever engineering.

At the base, there’s a new light, similar to the indicator on the Air 3 but smaller. It’s not for creating Close Encounters-like scenes; instead, it helps add stability during low-altitude hovering in dark conditions. While it might not have been a significant issue with the Mini 3 Pro, it’s a helpful addition, especially in dim lighting, although I personally don’t often fly in complete darkness.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro now comes with a propeller guard and a clear plastic stabilizer shroud in the package. The propeller guard, which attaches like a sports watch strap around the back of the drone, shields the propellers during transportation. While it’s a useful addition, attaching it can be a bit tricky. It’s beneficial for trips to prevent the propellers from getting caught in your bag, but if you frequently use the drone, you might prefer to leave it off.

My review unit is the Fly More Combo with the DJI RC 2. It’s pretty much the same package as the one for the Mini 3 Pro, featuring a similar bag and a 3-bay charging hub. However, the notable change is the remote, now called DJI RC 2.

See also  How to add subtitles to a TikTok video?

Similar to the DJI Air 3, the RC 2 is essentially like the previous RC, but it includes two retractable antennas on top. It functions similarly, with the same layout of display and buttons. The reason for this change is the new DJI O4 transmission system, which unfortunately isn’t compatible with the older remote controllers.

Flight Experience

During flight, the DJI Mini 4 Pro feels quite similar to its predecessor. It maintains the same size, weight, approximate top speed, flight duration, and resilience against wind.

However, there’s one new feature: now, you can see your drone’s location on a map displayed on the controller or in the DJI Fly app. The reason is that the DJI Mini 4 Pro now supports waypoint flights.

If you prefer full control over your drone, you might not use this feature much. But it opens up various creative possibilities. The drone can autonomously follow the same route at a consistent speed, making it perfect for capturing time-lapse footage spanning different seasons or for creating special effects. While this isn’t a new feature for DJI, it’s the first time it’s available on a Mini drone, and it’s a valuable addition.

Certainly, another noteworthy addition that impacts flight quality is the inclusion of omnidirectional obstacle avoidance. When flying manually, this means you can confidently maneuver sideways in places where you might have hesitated with the Mini 3 Pro.

This enhancement also enables the comprehensive ActiveTrack 360 system, allowing the drone to autonomously track a subject from any angle, not just from behind like the Mini 3 Pro. While not entirely novel, it’s exciting to see this feature on the Mini series.

DJI’s tracking capabilities are typically impressive, showcasing the drone’s ability to navigate through tree branches to keep up with a subject, which is consistently impressive. There are limitations, but the small size of the Mini 4 Pro comes in handy for maneuvering through tight spaces.

Camera Performance

The DJI Mini 4 Pro employs the same sensor and lens as its predecessor, so you can expect very similar photo and video quality in most situations.

However, there are some enhancements in the Mini 4 Pro to improve this content. One notable addition is the inclusion of the D Log M image profile. This profile offers a flatter image compared to the D Cinelike, the smoothest profile in the Mini 3 Pro.

With D Log M, users can expand the image’s color grading capabilities, potentially improving the dynamic range. It’s worth mentioning that D Log M is available on some of DJI’s more advanced drones like the Mavic 3 Pro. Now that you can choose the same profile on both drones, it’ll be much easier to mix and match footage from different devices.

The DJI Mini 4 Pro now supports HDR video at a higher frame rate, up to 4K60, compared to the previous 4K30. This improvement is beneficial if you wish to slow down your footage while maintaining high-quality visuals. Additionally, if HDR isn’t needed, you can shoot impressive 4x slow-motion footage in 4K100 resolution.

When viewed at regular speed, footage from the Mini 4 Pro appears quite similar to that of the Mini 3 Pro, which is still impressive. The imagery is sharp, impressively stable, and exhibits beautiful colors. For those familiar with color grading tools, there’s added potential for enhancing visuals, particularly due to the increased flexibility provided by the D Log M profile.

Conclusion

Overall, the DJI Mini 4 Pro doesn’t stray far from its predecessor, but the changes made are impactful. The standout upgrade for my needs is the new obstacle avoidance feature, particularly the added ActiveTrack capability. The improved slow-motion and D Log M features are also valuable additions.

While the Mini 4 Pro doesn’t revolutionize the drone market, it enhances existing capabilities and adds useful features to what was already my favorite drone. Existing users might not feel the urgency to upgrade, but for newcomers, the Mini 4 Pro stands out as a clear choice.

It’s a pricey drone, much like the Mini 3 Pro, but I believe it justifies its cost by offering nearly everything that DJI’s larger, more expensive drones provide, all in a compact body that’s more portable and requires fewer compliance obligations. Moreover, if you’re seeking something more affordable, I have no doubt that a non-professional model will likely be introduced soon.
