Insta360 Ace Pro Review

Insta360 Ace Pro Review: Insta360 began making cameras that capture 360-degree views, but they expanded to create different types of cameras, like the Insta360 One RS and the tiny Go 3. They also made a gimbal for smartphones called the Insta360 Flow.

However, they hadn’t made a traditional action camera like a GoPro until they introduced the Insta360 Ace Pro and its more affordable version, the Ace. These cameras caught my eye because they boast a large sensor, a screen that flips up, and an impressive 8K resolution. I’ve been testing the Ace Pro for a few weeks, and I’ll share what I’ve found out.

Pros and Cons of Insta360 Ace Pro

The Insta360 Ace Pro is a great start for a regular action camera. It captures fantastic shots in low light, has a handy flip-up screen, and pairs well with top-notch software. My only gripe is that it’s a bit pricey.

Pros

  • Excellent low-light grip
  • Easy-to-use flip-up screen.
  • Convenient mounting system
  • Best-in-class software
  • Long battery life and fast charging

Cons

  • More expensive than competitors
  • Only records 8-bit color
  • Microphones are sensitive to wind noise

Design

The Insta360 Ace Pro has a design like the GoPro Hero 12 Black, but it’s a bit thicker and heavier due to its flip-up screen. This screen, larger and clearer than the one on the Insta360 Go 3, is a first for regular action cameras. It’s super helpful for framing shots, especially when you’re in the footage or capturing low-angle scenes. The screen seems robust and reliable, although its durability over time remains to be seen, as moving parts can sometimes be less sturdy. Nonetheless, similar mechanisms on other cameras have held up well.

The Insta360 Ace Pro can handle depths up to 10 meters underwater without an extra case, just like the Hero 12, and seems quite tough. However, the lens protector, although replaceable in theory, is glued in, which might make fixing scratches or cracks a bit challenging.

One cool feature is its magnetic mounting system at the base, similar to the DJI Osmo Action 4. I like this because if you have extra base plates, you can quickly switch the camera between different mounts. It’s faster compared to unscrewing a thumbscrew, which is needed for GoPro-style mounts, and once attached, it feels just as secure.

The Insta360 Ace Pro comes with a removable battery packing a 1650 mAh capacity. It’s slightly lower compared to the GoPro Enduro’s battery capacity, but in practical terms, it lasts about the same time. It’s designed to record continuously for 100 minutes at 4K30.

For connectivity and accessories, the camera includes a USB-C port for transferring data, charging the battery, and connecting audio accessories. Additionally, it features a microSD card slot for storing data. With the right charger, it supports fast charging up to 30W, enabling a full charge in just 46 minutes. However, note that the package does not include a charger, only a USB-C to C cable, a base mount, and the camera itself.

App & Features

The Insta360 Ace Pro uses the same awesome smartphone app and desktop software as other cameras in the Insta360 lineup. What’s great about the app is its fast and reliable connection to the camera, which is something GoPro and DJI cameras sometimes struggle with.

Another cool thing is the ability to personalize and edit your clips right on your computer. Unlike DJI, which lacks this feature, GoPro has announced they’re working on Quik for desktop, but it’s not available yet, and when it does come out, you’ll need an active GoPro subscription to use it.

The Insta360 app has all the expected features for camera control, like adjusting settings, watching footage, and editing clips. But what makes it special are the unique templates and effects. One standout effect is AI Warp, using artificial intelligence to create funky visuals on your footage. It’s not something you’d use often, but for a standout clip, it’s eye-catching. Also, you can swap out skies in your videos, adding epic clouds or even Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” to your scene.

One of my favorite features on the Insta360 Ace Pro is Motion ND. It’s cool because it makes moving objects look blurry, like a long-exposure photo, great for time-lapse videos on sunny days when you don’t have a special filter.

The camera doesn’t have built-in GPS, but you can easily add GPS data to your videos using your phone’s GPS when connected to the camera’s app. If you use a Garmin fitness tracker or an Apple Watch, they can provide GPS data too. Unfortunately, my Wear OS watch didn’t connect, but the app worked well.

You can use Bluetooth headphones with the Ace Pro, but just like the Hero 12 Black, the sound quality isn’t great for serious projects. I even tried connecting it to a Bluetooth speaker out of curiosity, but it didn’t serve much purpose. Generally, the built-in microphones are better for recording.

Image Quality

I’ve checked the footage from the Insta360 Ace Pro against the Hero 12 Black in daylight. They both do a great job with colors, offer good stabilization, and capture a wide range of light – especially at 4K30 or below when the Ace Pro’s automatic HDR is on.

They’re pretty similar, but I have a slight preference for how the GoPro captures skin tones and overall looks. However, the Insta360 is better at exposing scenes properly, especially when focusing on faces.

At night, the Insta360 Ace Pro outperforms the Hero 12 Black by capturing much more detailed footage. When I drove through poorly lit streets, the Hero 12 Black struggled, resulting in dark, grainy footage. However, the Ace Pro delivered detailed shots that looked like they were taken during the day.

This camera’s large sensor plays a big role, but it’s also supported by Insta360’s PureVideo technology. This tech uses a special chip to improve the footage by reducing noise, increasing dynamic range, and enhancing stabilization. For night shooting, it’s one of the best action cameras out there.

The Ace Pro also has a feature called Clarity Zoom, which lets you zoom in 2x without losing a lot of quality. It’s helpful, but in my tests, I noticed some frames skipping when using this zoom, so it’s better suited for capturing still subjects than fast-moving action.

The Insta360 Ace Pro offers 8K shooting at 24fps, but my camera’s current firmware doesn’t support it yet. However, I’m not too bothered by this since 8K has large file sizes and isn’t ideal for action shots. I prefer slow-motion capabilities, and the Ace Pro excels at this, shooting up to 120fps in 4K or 240fps in 1080p.

One drawback could be the color depth. While competitors like the Osmo Action 4 and Hero 12 Black capture 10-bit color with robust log profiles, the Ace Pro is limited to 8-bit color with a high-contrast flat profile. This might not satisfy professional colorists who prefer more color depth.

On the sound front, the Ace Pro impressed me. Its three microphones capture realistic and clear sound with good directionality. However, they are sensitive to wind noise, a common issue in action cameras. While there’s a wind noise reduction option in the software, it doesn’t fully eliminate wind noise, especially when you’re moving. A physical windproof case or an external microphone might be a better solution for this issue.

Conclusion

The Insta360 Ace Pro is a remarkable entry into traditional action cameras. It introduces a unique flip-up camera, which is very useful for self-shooting, and delivers top-notch image quality that matches the best in the industry. Its low-light performance is outstanding, possibly surpassing the DJI Osmo Action 4, though I haven’t compared them side by side to confirm.

The main issue here is the price; the Ace Pro is around $50 more expensive than its closest rivals, which could make it a tough sell. It does have some standout features, like exceptional software and the rare flip-up screen, but whether it’s worth the higher price depends on your preferences.

Nevertheless, it’s exciting to welcome another significant player into the action camera market, and I’m eager to see what more the Ace lineup has in store for the future. Share your thoughts regarding Insta360 Ace Pro Review in our comments section.
