Final Words for DJI Osmo Action 4 Review :

The DJI Osmo Action 4 stands out as a top-notch compact action camera, particularly excelling in low-light conditions. It’s considered a dependable and strong competitor to the GoPro Hero 11 Black.

Pros

  • GoPro’s Superior Low-Light Performance

Cons

  • GoPro Hero 11 is still better in good lighting
  • You have to physically rotate 90° for 9:16 content.

DJI is a top name in drones, but in the action camera world, it usually trails behind GoPro. However, the new DJI Osmo Action 4 is aiming to directly challenge the GoPro Hero 11 Black, especially with its larger 1/1.3-inch sensor promising better video quality in low-light situations.

Priced similarly to the GoPro Hero 11 Black, the Osmo Action 4 isn’t positioned as a budget-friendly option but rather as a direct rival. Can it give the Hero a run for its money? Let’s explore further to find out.

Design & Processing

  • Size 70.5 x 44.2 x 32.8 mm, weight 145 g.
  • Waterproof up to 18 m without additional cover.
  • Touchscreens are 1.4 inches at the front and 2.25 inches at the rear.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 doesn’t look too different from the Osmo Action 3 on the outside, but it packs improvements inside. Just like its previous version, the Action 4 features touchscreens at the front and back, a large record button, and a protective frame that allows users to switch between horizontal and vertical orientations easily.

It has magnetic clips on the frame, which let you shoot in different video formats. You can detach it, rotate it, and reattach it to switch between formats like 16:9 or 9:16 for platforms like TikTok. This is handy for adapting to the rise of vertical video, though it’s not as seamless as GoPro’s method for the Hero 11 Black, which uses a square sensor and cropping for different formats.

Where the Action 4 outshines the GoPro is in durability. It’s waterproof up to 18m without additional protection (while the GoPro handles 10m; the Action 3 manages 16m). DJI claims its batteries are designed to work in very cold temperatures down to -20°C.

Similar to previous Osmo Action cameras, the Action 4 uses the same screw mounts as GoPro, offering plenty of options for third-party mounts. DJI provides various mounts and accessories, ensuring versatility in placing the camera on bikes, helmets, selfie sticks, and more.

Handling the Action 4 is typical for a small, lightweight box-shaped camera. It might not be as comfortable to hold as a traditional DSLR camera, but since it’s often mounted, it’s not a major issue. The settings menu UI is straightforward and user-friendly.

Features & Performance

  • Improved RockSteady+ image stabilization.
  • 160 minutes of battery life
  • USB-C, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth

The DJI Osmo Action 4 showcases a few noteworthy improvements compared to the Action 3: it now supports microSD cards up to 512GB instead of the previous limit of 256GB. Additionally, the image stabilization has been slightly upgraded from Rocksteady 3.0 to 3.0+, enhancing stability during recordings (more details on this below).

However, in several areas such as battery life, connectivity, screen resolution, ISO, and shutter speed, the specifications remain mostly unchanged.

The removable 1770mAh battery allows for approximately 160 minutes of continuous recording on a full charge, at 1080p/24fps (naturally, this duration reduces if recording at higher resolutions or frame rates like 4K/120fps). Throughout my review period of several days, I only needed to recharge the battery once. Recharging is convenient with USB-C support while the battery is installed. For users engaged in frequent recording, purchasing a three-battery charging case with additional batteries is highly recommended.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 maintains its dual touchscreens from the Action 3, which adds a convenient aspect to its design. The front screen is beneficial for previewing image framing and exposure, although it’s disabled during 4K/60fps or higher recording, which can be a bit inconvenient. It also assists in navigating menus and adjusting settings, but personally, I found the larger rear screen more user-friendly for these tasks.

In terms of connectivity, it offers a USB-C port for both charging and data transfer, along with dual-band Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0. This allows wireless connections to smartphones equipped with the DJI Mimo app for remote control and viewing, or to a DJI wireless microphone for better audio recording.

The camera’s image stabilization operates entirely electronically and offers different modes. Disabling stabilization may result in significant camera shake during movement. RockSteady provides effective motion smoothing without excessive cropping of the image. RockSteady+ enhances stabilization further but might slightly reduce the frame’s detail due to its noticeable cropping. HorizonSteady keeps the frame aligned with the horizon up to a 45° angle in either direction, functioning smoothly. Overall, I’m genuinely impressed with the array of stabilization settings available; it gives GoPro some strong competition in this regard.

Video & Photo Quality

  • 4K video at up to 120 frames per second
  • 10-bit D-Log M color profile
  • 10MP photos in JPEG or RAW format.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 holds a notable advantage with its 1/1.3-inch sensor, which is notably larger than its competitors like the GoPro Hero 11 Black and the Action 3, sporting smaller sensors like 1/1.9-inch and 1/1.7-inch, respectively.

This larger sensor size brings larger pixels, allowing the Action 4 to capture more light compared to typical action camera sensors. This gives it an upper hand, especially in challenging low-light scenarios. When I say low light, I’m referring to situations such as dark nights outdoors, where minimal ambient lighting from streetlights or other sources is available. While action cameras have historically struggled in such conditions, the Action 4, if used properly, can deliver impressive detail and contrast. It’s important to note that it won’t outperform a full-frame mirrorless camera, but for tasks like vlogging in the evening or capturing night scenes while driving, it stands out as a much better option than other action cameras I’ve come across.

In well-lit environments, my preference still leans towards the GoPro Hero 11 Black, especially for video content straight from the camera. To me, the footage appears more realistic, sharp, and detailed compared to the 4K content captured by the Action 4. However, it’s important to note that the 4K output from the Action 4 isn’t subpar by any means. It’s quite the opposite, and you have the flexibility to shoot in 10-bit D-Log M for better color grading and dynamic range adjustments to achieve top-notch color reproduction.

When it comes to the camera aspect, the Action 4 performs well within the realm of action cameras. However, it doesn’t stand out particularly when compared to, for instance, a decent smartphone, let alone a mirrorless or DSLR camera. It may not be the go-to choice for capturing formal events like weddings, but it serves its purpose decently if there aren’t better options available.

Final Words

The DJI Osmo Action 4 proves itself as a dependable and solid action camera in various aspects. Its size, build quality, user interface, and battery life all check out well, and it consistently delivers decent image quality. Notably, it stands out as a superior low-light performer compared to its current rivals.

However, in optimal lighting scenarios, the GoPro Hero 11 Black still outshines its competition in videography, boasting an impressive 5.3K resolution and a high frame rate of 240fps at 2.7K (unlike the Action 4, which caps at 240fps in 1080p resolution). Plus, with the GoPro Hero 12 on the horizon, the Action 4’s low-light dominance might face a challenge.

Nevertheless, it serves as a commendable alternative to the Hero 11 Black, particularly for demanding videographers who value the Action 4’s exceptional 10-bit color profile. For most users, the Action 4’s 4K/120fps capability covers a wide range of needs, so if you decide to purchase it, you’re unlikely to feel disappointed.
