Nikon Z8 Review

Nikon Z8 Review : Nikon is bringing out the Z8, which they’re touting as the next-gen successor to their amazing DSLR, the Nikon D850. This camera shares a lot of features with the Z9, their top-tier mirrorless camera, but it’s smaller and less expensive.


From what I’ve seen and used, this camera seems like it’s going to be one of the best options out there in 2023. It’s got an impressive list of specifications that cater to both photographers and video makers.

I haven’t used a Nikon in a while, but all the talk about this camera got me curious. I’ve been testing it for a couple of weeks now, and I have to say, it’s been living up to the hype. That’s how things are going with it.

Pros and Cons of Nikon Z8

The Nikon Z8 packs a punch in terms of both speed and resolution, excelling in both photography and video. It shares many capabilities with Nikon’s top-tier Z9, but comes in a smaller body and at a more affordable price point.

Looking at the Z8, its resemblance to the Z9 is unmistakable, except for the absence of the built-in battery handle at the bottom. If you prefer a larger body, you can attach the Nikon Battery Grip (MB-N12), sold separately for $350, which is a more budget-friendly option compared to going for the Z9.

Though around 30 percent smaller than the Z9, the Z8 is not a small camera, weighing 910g without the substantial full-frame lens. Despite its weight, it feels comfortable to hold, thanks to its well-designed and roomy handle.

The controls on the Z8 are neatly organized and intuitive. I particularly appreciate the two customizable function buttons on the front, which are easily accessible. I’m used to similar function buttons on my GH6, so having them here made it easier for me to get accustomed to this camera.

However, one thing that took some getting used to was the absence of a PASM dial. Instead, there are four buttons for mode selection, drive, bracketing, and white balance. Switching between modes requires using two hands: pressing the mode button while adjusting it with the control ring. It felt a bit different initially as it’s not what I’m used to, but it does make accidental mode changes less likely, which I can understand as a deliberate design choice.

Connectivity & Displays

In terms of connectivity, the Z8 comes equipped with a full-size HDMI port, 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks, and two USB-C ports. Additionally, it features a 10-pin remote port positioned at a 45-degree angle on the camera’s side. Although it may seem slightly awkward visually, users of compatible remotes will appreciate its inclusion.

Unlike its larger counterpart, the Z9, the Z8 lacks an RJ45 port. However, it compensates by offering an extra USB-C port, allowing users to connect a USB-C to Ethernet adapter if needed. Additionally, it doesn’t have built-in GPS connectivity, but alternatives using a mobile app or a 10-pin connector can provide that data. While this might not be essential for me, I recognize its significance for some photographers.

Regarding storage options, the Z8 features one CFexpress slot and an SD card slot. For high-end video recording modes, using the CFexpress slot is necessary. Unfortunately, the camera’s USB-C output isn’t fast enough for recording directly to a portable SSD, although it functions adequately at lower settings.

The Nikon Z8 comes with a 3.2-inch tilting LCD screen sporting a resolution of 2.1 million dots. Similar to the Z9, this screen is responsive and excellent for focus adjustments and menu navigation. While it’s not a flip-up screen suitable for vlogging, it’s versatile, allowing you to tilt it in various directions for adaptable shooting angles.

Its electronic viewfinder, a 0.5-inch OLED panel with 3.69 million dots, is maintained well, but compared to rivals like the EOS R5 and Sony A7R V, it falls a bit behind in resolution. Nevertheless, it still performs impressively, providing a clear and useful view for composing shots.

Another feature is the small monochrome settings bar displayed at the top of the camera. While not revolutionary, it’s a handy addition, as not all cameras offer this feature. It provides a quick glance at essential settings without cluttering the LCD or electronic viewfinder with excessive information.

Photos and videos of the performance

The Nikon Z8 shares the same 45.7MP multi-layer sensor and Expeed 7 processor as its high-end counterpart, the Z9. With a Nikkor Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S lens, it excelled in various photography genres like product, street, and reportage.

This sensor’s high resolution captures an incredible amount of detail, although it might not quite match the 61MP output of the Sony A7R V, it surpasses it in speed. The Z8’s sensor can shoot up to 30 JPEG frames per second or 20 RAW shots. Remarkably, it can achieve an astonishing 120 frames per second at 11MP resolution. In comparison, the A7R V manages a maximum speed of just 7 frames per second when shooting uncompressed RAW.

Interestingly, the Z8, much like the Z9, lacks a mechanical shutter, which isn’t needed given its high-quality build. It might feel unusual to use a top-notch camera without the typical shutter click sound, and the artificial sound might not be pleasing either. However, it offers a completely silent shooting mode, which can be preferred in many scenarios and can also be customized to turn off artificial sounds for a truly quiet experience.

The Nikon Z8 impressively handles noise reduction, allowing for usable shots even at higher ISO settings like ISO 12800. Although I rarely needed to push it that high, the camera’s VR (Vibration Reduction) or IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) greatly helps stabilize photos. However, I found it slightly jittery when used for video shooting.

Regarding video capabilities, the Z8 is competitive. It boasts 8K recording at 60 frames per second, a feature not commonly found in many cameras. While most users might not need 8K60, having this capability is a plus.

For those who appreciate slow-motion shots, the Z8 offers a favorite B-roll setting: 4K at 120fps, allowing for stunning slow-motion footage. Additionally, it provides recording in 12-bit N-RAW and 10-bit 4:2:2, particularly in this mode. In more standard settings like 4K60, it also supports recording in ProRes HQ and ProRes Raw formats.

I haven’t had sufficient time to thoroughly delve into the Z8’s extensive video capabilities, but it’s impressively competitive at the moment. The autofocus while shooting video is highly efficient, not quite matching Sony’s level but demonstrating reliability akin to Canon and Lumix, which surprised me. For most of my work, I’d feel confident relying on it.

However, the IBIS (In-Body Image Stabilization) could perform better in videography; it tends to exhibit some jerky movements, akin to what I’ve noticed on recent Fujifilm cameras. While it’s decent, there’s certainly room for improvement.


The Nikon Z8 is a remarkable all-in-one camera suitable for various shooting needs. Whether you’re into photography or videography, this camera excels. It delivers highly detailed images, swift and accurate autofocus, rapid continuous shooting, and a multitude of professional-grade video capabilities.

While it’s undeniably pricey and sizable, it offers substantial value compared to many rivals and even its higher-end counterpart, the Z9.
