Sony A6700 Review: Absolutely, the Sony A6700 doesn’t venture far from the established formula, but it remains a powerful hybrid mirrorless camera. It excels in several aspects, particularly its top-notch autofocus system, a diverse set of video capabilities, and a high-performance sensor that delivers impressive results in various shooting scenarios. Despite not introducing groundbreaking design alterations or features, its existing strengths make it a compelling choice.

Pros and Cons of Sony A6700 Review

  • Small and light to carry around

Cons

  • Only one slot for SD card
  • Can sometimes get too hot in certain situations
  • The design might not be everyone’s favorite

These simple descriptions highlight the strong and weak points of the camera and give a clearer picture of its specifications in easier terms. If you need more details or specific information, feel free to ask!

Introduction

Sony’s mirrorless cameras are often synonymous with full-frame excellence, but their APS-C lineup, though often overlooked, has a lot to offer. The arrival of the Sony A6700, the brand’s latest flagship APS-C model in four years, expands this range.

Compared to full-frame cameras, the A6700 is smaller and lighter. It’s a versatile hybrid camera ideal for both photography and videography. Boasting a new 26-megapixel sensor, a robust BIONZ XR processor, a dedicated AI processor, and a relatively affordable price, it’s a promising addition to Sony’s lineup.

Could this APS-C model be the one to steal the limelight from Sony’s popular full-frame cameras? I put the A6700 to the test, and here’s what I discovered.

Design & Processing

  • Size 122 x 69 x 75.1 mm, weight 493 g.
  • Splash and dust resistant design
  • New tilt-and-turn screen design.

The design of Sony’s APS-C cameras has faced criticism before, and the A6700 doesn’t deviate much from this. It maintains a boxy and compact form, which might not be the most comfortable for users with larger hands, especially when compared to DSLR-style bodies.

That said, the A6700 does have a slightly larger grip compared to the A6600, which helped me (with medium-sized hands) handle it more comfortably, especially when using larger lenses.

With smaller lenses, the camera setup becomes impressively compact and lightweight, even among mirrorless cameras. While I still prefer the classic DSLR shape for comfort, the A6700’s design isn’t as extreme as some critics claim. It’s also well-built; while lacking an official IP rating, it’s resistant to rain and splashes, and the magnesium alloy body feels robust.

The OLED viewfinder on the A6700 is positioned more towards the left side of the camera’s back, which might take a little time to get used to if you’re accustomed to central electronic viewfinders. However, it’s not a major issue, and it comes with a decent-sized rubber eyecup for comfortable use.

Unlike its predecessor, the A6700’s 3-inch screen now flips to the side instead of straight up. This is a significant improvement as it prevents complete obstruction by any attachments on the hot shoe. But keep in mind that cables for USB-C, microphone, or headphones might slightly block your view.

For connectivity, you get expected features like a micro HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.2, and dual-band Wi-Fi. There’s only one SD card slot, which might seem limited for a premium model, but understandable given the compact size.

Controls have also seen positive changes, including a new switch that swiftly toggles between photo, video, and S&Q (slow and fast). Above it, the camera retains a standard PASM drive. Additionally, the video record button is now positioned on top of the camera, making it more convenient than the awkwardly located button on the A6600’s rear panel.

Features & Performance

  • 759-point AI AF system.
  • 11 fps continuous shooting
  • Long battery life with the NP-FZ100.

The Sony A6700 retains the 5-axis stabilization found in its predecessor, the A6600, but with a slight improvement in the form of a new active mode meant specifically for video. While this diminishes camera shake, it also crops a significant portion of the sensor area, resulting in a narrower field of view. While the stabilization is reliable, offering around five stops of compensation, it might not match up to some competitors like the Panasonic GH6 in effectiveness.

However, where Sony excels is in autofocus technology, and the A6700 benefits from its advanced hybrid phase and contrast detection system. It boasts an impressive 759 detection points across the sensor area, enhanced by artificial intelligence for object recognition. This camera can identify not just human faces and eyes, but also different body shapes and various objects like birds, animals, insects, vehicles, and more.

You just select the desired subject type for the autofocus, and once it spots the subject within the frame, it sticks to it tightly. This autofocus system is incredibly impressive, boasting remarkable accuracy and speed, excelling in both photo and video shooting scenarios.

For continuous shooting, the camera maintains a speed of 11 frames per second, similar to the A6600. However, the A6700 comes with a larger buffer that accommodates around 1000 JPEG files or approximately 60 lossless RAW files, offering more storage for your burst shots. Additionally, it introduces the ability to capture photos in HEIF format, a first for a Sony APS-C camera, alongside JPEG and RAW formats.

Regarding battery performance, the A6700 uses the reliable NP-FZ100 battery. With a full charge, it’s rated for approximately 550 photos or 95 minutes of continuous video recording according to CIPA standards. Typically, you might get even more usage, showcasing impressive endurance.

One aspect to consider is that unlike certain Sony models, the A6700 lacks a dedicated cooling system, likely due to its compact size. Consequently, there’s a risk of the camera overheating, especially during extended recording sessions with 4K quality or higher frame rates. To prevent overheating, the camera may shut down after about 30 minutes of continuous use to cool down.

Photo & Video Quality

  • 26MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor
  • 4K video at up to 120 frames per second
  • Multiple image profiles to choose from

The Sony A6700 utilizes a 26MP APS-C sensor, originally featured in Sony’s FX30 Cinema Line camcorder. However, this hybrid camera offers a more balanced approach compared to the FX30, featuring essential components like a viewfinder and a mechanical shutter.

Despite its smaller size in comparison to Sony’s full-frame sensors, this sensor performs remarkably well, delivering impressive image quality across various scenarios. It excels in areas like dynamic range, accurate color rendering, and detailed imagery, even in low-light conditions.

The lens choice will significantly impact the final results (many of the showcased shots were captured using Sony’s advanced 70-200mm F4 zoom lens). Overall, there are minimal concerns about the quality of both photos and videos produced by this camera. While full-frame cameras might offer slightly better dynamic range and low-light capabilities, they also come with a higher price tag and increased weight to carry around.

The Sony A6700 offers users a wide range of image options. For photos, it supports shooting in the HEIF format, similar to the iPhone’s format. When it comes to video capabilities, it can record in 10-bit 4:2:2 color depth, offering various color profiles like Hybrid Log Gamma, S-Log2, and S-Cinetone. These features cater to the preferences of serious videographers, providing greater control over color grading and post-processing.

The camera can capture regular 4K videos at a maximum of 60 frames per second. Additionally, it supports 4K slow-motion recording at up to 120 frames per second, ensuring smooth and detailed frame-by-frame playback in slow-motion sequences.

Verdict for Sony A6700 Review

The Sony A6700 may not steal the spotlight within Sony’s camera lineup, but it builds upon earlier APS-C models with significant enhancements, notably featuring an exceptional autofocus system.

Its compact and robust body might not suit everyone’s preferences, but it does house a responsive touchscreen and a satisfactory viewfinder. Sony proves there’s ongoing innovation and capability within the APS-C domain. Share your thoughts about Sony A6700 Review in our comments section.
